Former NFL star Peyton Hillis was discharged from a Florida hospital after an extended stay in an intensive care unit, according to a social media post from his girlfriend.
Hillis had been in critical condition and was placed on a ventilator earlier this month following a swimming accident in Pensacola, Fla.
Hillis, who turned 37 on Saturday, was reportedly rescued by Escambia County Fire Rescue responders on Jan. 5 shortly after the running back himself had saved several young family members from drowning.

Hillis had been on the receiving end of prayers and well wishes from across the football community ever since the incident. Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith was among those who visited Hillis after he regained consciousness.

A 2008 seventh-round pick of the Denver Broncos, Hillis had a short but memorable NFL career after four years at the University of Arkansas.
Hillis was best known for a breakout 2010 campaign with the Cleveland Browns that helped him land a spot on the cover of the popular Madden video game series. The Conway, Ark., native also had brief stints with the Chiefs and Giants before officially retiring from football in 2015.
